Wine Tasting - Rhone Valley Wines at GEM
REDS & WHITES OF THE RHONE VALLEY - GEM Wine Cellar, Portland OR (9/5/2008)
In celebration of his wife Janice's birthday, Gene at GEM Wine Cellar & Wine Bar featured a Rhone Valley wine tasting. Two incredible homemade cakes were served as well.
- 2005 Domaine Brusset Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne Coteaux des Travers - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne
Slightly sweet, nice fruit...apples and pears all around.(85 pts.) - 2005 Domaine Rabasse-Charavin Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne
Honeydew melon, mixed with some citrus fruit and a bit of honeysuckle.(86 pts.) - 2007 Domaine Rouge-Bleu Vin de Pays des Portes de la Méditerranée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vin de Pays des Portes de la Méditerranée
Very light, young, thin. Bright fruit, but much too thin to be enjoyable.(78 pts.) - 2006 Domaine André Brunel Côtes du Rhône - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Tasty fruit, with a slight taste of earth, somewhat sweet, but with a funky finish. Drinking well now.(85 pts.) - 2004 La Bouquetière Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very tasty, with heavy earth flavors to go with the blackberry fruit. 90% grenache, 5% syrah & mourvedre.(87 pts.) - 2005 Philippe Faury Côte-Rôtie - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
My first taste of Cote-Rotie, so not sure what to expect. Nose of blueberry and black fruits, with a somewhat funky smell in there as well, that I can't decipher. Lush fruit on the attack. Firm tannins, leaving a very dry finish. I hope this is not representative of the region, because it was definitely a "meh" wine for me.(86 pts.)
